With a belly searching for bread

A job, or paid work, is nowadays, just like in the past, a necessary commodity to survive our everyday life.

There are more and more areas that are unable to provide adequate jobs for their residents, and thus daily labor migrations, or daily departures to work in another region or country without resulting in settling in another region or country, are increasingly occurring.

In Slovenia, in 2022 and for the sixth time in a row, the central Slovenian region with its capital Ljubljana was the only one that had more jobs than it had inhabitants. 24.200 workers left Ljubljana to work in other municipalities. 141.300 of them came to Ljubljana daily. The largest number of workers (23.656) came to work in Ljubljana from the Gorenjska region. With 14.095, the Savinjska region is in second place and with 13.634 it is followed by labor migration to the central region of South-Eastern Slovenia. There were 11.915 daily commutes from the Podravska region to the Osrednjeslovenska region. 10.208 from the Zasavska region. Less than 10.000 people come to work in the central region every day from the other regions: 6.652 from Obalnokraška, 6.426 from Primorsko-notranjska, 5.215 from Goriška, 4.598 from Posavska, 3.862 from Pomurska and 2.020 from Koroška.

Among daily labor migrants, we also find foreigners, who mostly come to work in Slovenia from neighboring countries, such as Italy (1.792), Austria (141), Hungary (655) and Croatia (10.216). (Source: SURS).

According to data from the Employment Agency, in December 2022, the highest unemployment rate in the 15-24 age group was in the Pomurska region, South-Eastern Slovenia and the Posavska region. In the age group of 25-29, the largest number of unemployed were in the Pomurska, Podravska and Koroška regions. In the 30-34 age group, the largest number of unemployed were in the Pomurska, Posavska and Podravska regions. In the 35-39 age group, the highest unemployment rate was in Pomurska, Posavska and Obalno-Kraška.

The Pomurska, Posavska and Zasavska regions had the highest unemployment rate in the 40-44 age group in December 2022. Posavska, Pomurska and Zasavska regions had the highest unemployment rate in the 45-49 age group.

After the turning point of 50, or as we call Abraham, and up to the age of 54, the Pomurska, Posavska and Podravska regions had the highest unemployment rate. The unemployment rate started to rise in the age group of 55-59 years. In this age group, the Posavska, Pomurska and Podravska regions had the highest unemployment rate. According to the same data, workers in the last age group of 60 and over are the most difficult to employ. In this age group, the Posavska, Pomurska and Savinjska regions had the highest unemployment rate. All three regions also had an unemployment rate of more than 13 in this age group.

At the end of 2022, the highest unemployment rate in the whole of Slovenia was also in the last age group, which is 60 or older. And most likely, in this age group, it is also the most difficult for them to leave "with a belly searhing for bread" to other regions or even countries.

In terms of the highest rate of unemployment, the 60 and over age group was followed by the 15-24 age group at the level of the whole of Slovenia. This age group also has the largest number of first-time job seekers.
