Sunny weather will save you

Floods engulfed Slovenia and rivers rose and began to flood. Rivers eroded their banks, hit bridges and even damaged or even washed away some bridges with their new strength. Torrential rains appeared and the water that splashed from them caused the slopes to slide or avalanches and carried away everything in front of them.

Some people were leaving their homes to escape. Still other people, with desperation in their eyes and their stubborn character, tried to save their homes and their other possessions. They dug trenches, pumped water from their homes and removed mud, and carried and drove at least some of their possessions to safety. Still other people offered refuge to people whose homes had been destroyed by floods or torrents or landslides. People are different and our reactions are also different.

The sun has finally shone and the swollen rivers will slowly return to their beds. Even torrential rains will dry up, leaving behind only traces of their destructive action.

I took it well this time, because I live on a hill more than 3 km from the Sava river and the railway station next to it. So far, no cracks have appeared on the so-called "scarps", nor has water flowed from or over them. I hope that everyone affected will not experience my past snowing nightmare of snow falling between every shingle on the slab above my apartment. The firemen did nothing, because according to their expert assessment, my attic apartment should have collapsed due to snow falling over the roof. So I removed the snow myself from the slab above the apartment. I set the foil on the plate myself and dried and disinfected the apartment and renovated it. The insurance company paid nothing because the roof was old, even though the building manager was able to insure it. In addition, there was also the possibility that the roof was poorly or "cheekily" made. In short, I was left alone in my struggle not to become homeless.

This week, however, I am watching others who were also left alone in the fight for their homes, and I hope that, like me, they will not cover all the damage to their property by themselves. I hope that they will not be left alone with all the damage to their homes, as I was left with the so-called snowy Zasavje, because even the insurance companies will reject their damage claims.

However, this is possible with all our insurances and, of course, increasingly "professional" requirements for land management, watercourses, communal land management and, of course, professional construction of houses, bridges, roads...
