Monogamy in our culture

The European space is also supposed to be a space of support for monogamous family unity. A monogamous community is defined as a family community of two partners. Initially, marriage was also defined as a monogamous community of two, that is, a husband and a wife. Only recently have we also known about marriage or a community of two same-sex partners.

In fact, monogamy is legalized, at least in Slovenia. In Article 188 of the Criminal Code, you can find the criminal offense of bigamy, which is defined as follows:

"1. Whoever enters into a new marriage, even though he is already married, shall be punished with a fine or imprisonment for up to one year.

2. The same punishment shall also be imposed on whoever enters into a marriage with a person whom he knows to be married.

3. If the previous marriage has ended or has been annulled, prosecution shall not commence, but if it has commenced, it shall be suspended." /End of quote from the Criminal Code, which defines criminal offenses in the Republic of Slovenia/.

In contrast to monogamy, we also know bigamy in the world, as a union of one person with two people. Simply put, this is the marriage of one man with two women.

We also know, on a global scale, the practice of polygamy in many cultures, which means the marriage of one person with several other people.

Polygamy or polyandry is said to be undesirable, prohibited and even a criminal offense in Europe. This also includes harems, although harem persons are often defined as inferior family members or even as persons who are not family members, but are only mistresses or lovers or even domestic workers.

People on a global scale simply have problems with legal monogamous sexual fidelity in everyday life. Infidelity, especially sexual infidelity, is a very common cause of divorce or, simply put, separation.

However, extramarital affairs or hookups and/or even permanent lovers are very rarely defined as an unwanted crime in the European area, unlike in the Asian or African area. The problem is probably that the spouses, together with the extramarital attachments of the family or marriage, simply did not register their cohabitation at a common address, which could be defined as an extramarital affair or the conclusion of an additional marriage.

Although people from harems and/or lovers are so clearly present in our everyday lives and also participate in joint family incomes, or they also represent family expenses, we do not condemn them socio-culturally, let alone prosecute and punish them in the European area itself. In Asia, Africa, and South America, however, legal or lawful marriage, or a form of family union, may be the majority.
