The legitimacy of the use of the Slovenian language in Slovenia

Debates about the legitimacy of the demand to use the Slovenian language in the territory of Slovenia flared up again. Some believe that working in Slovenia does not require knowledge of the Slovenian language. However, even those who want to work in Slovenia believe that they do not need knowledge of the Slovenian language.

Even in practice, not only in theory, the official Slovenian language should be spoken in companies operating in Slovenia. Therefore, it is also a normal consequence that everyone who is employed in Slovenia should also understand and speak the Slovenian language. This is what the government insists on using the official Slovenian language in Slovenia.

On the other hand some people thinks, the Slovene language means preventing the employment of foreign workers. If this side wins, it is not only the theoretically mandated use of the Slovenian official language that is in question. In practice, this means that you will, for example, talk to a doctor in a foreign language, as well as to your boss, colleague, friend, neighbor and, of course, to all those who work for us.

In Slovenia, however, the Constitution of the Republic of Slovenia is clearly not sufficient, where it is clearly defined that Slovenian is the official language in the territory of the Republic of Slovenia, except in the areas of the Italian and Hungarian minorities. Thus, the government of the Republic of Slovenia had to specify in the conditions for employment that knowledge of the Slovenian language is also required.

Of course, the question of the mentality or the definition of Slovenia with its territory remains an open question among those who would like employment in Slovenia, but apparently do not think that they need knowledge of the Slovenian language for one reason or another. It is true that Slovenians love to speak foreign languages, but I still hope that the Slovenian language is our favorite in everyday life.
