Illegal migration are decreased
In the period from 01/01/2024 to 08/31/2024, the number of illegal migrants in Slovenia decreased compared to the same period in 2023. In this period this year, according to the data of the Uniformed Police Administration, Border Police Sector, there were 32,002 of them. In the same period in 2023, there were 36,140. Thus, compared to the same period last year, illegal migration decreased by more than 4,000.
Citizens of Syria (the number of illegal migrants with Syrian citizenship increased), Afghanistan (the number of illegal migrants decreased this year) and Turkey (the number of illegal migrants increased this year) were most often dealt with for illegal migration or unauthorized entry into Slovenia. Turkey, which is in third place this year in terms of the number of illegal migrations to Slovenia, is also a member of NATO and for now belongs to the countries that are not in a state of war. That is why the number of Turkish illegal migrants to Slovenia is all the more interesting and, of course, also a special problem, that illegal migrants are coming to Slovenia from a country with which we are actually allies in NATO.
Turkish illegal migrants are most likely also among those illegal migrants who apply for international protection after entering Slovenia illegally. Out of 32,002 illegal migrants, 30,755 applied for international protection in eight months this year. During this period of this year, as many as 2,690 Turkish citizens crossed the Slovenian border illegally. And their number in this period this year, compared to the same period in 2023, more than doubled.
As in the same period last year, the largest number of illegal migrations took place on the border with Croatia. This year, there were 31,290 such cases of illegal crossings at the border with Croatia. The most common illegal migrants are from Syria (11,239), Afghanistan (4,944) and Turkey (2,686). Last year, however, 34,492 migrants crossed the same border with Croatia illegally. Most often, illegal migrants were from Afghanistan (9,736), Morocco (5,490) and Pakistan (3,558).
In general, during this period, according to the same data source, we also found a smaller number of illegal residents in Slovenia. In 2023, 1,485 illegal migrants were identified as residing in Slovenia. The most numerous were citizens of Moldova, Macedonia, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia. This year, until August 31, 2024, 1,183 foreigners lived in Slovenia illegally. The most common foreigners who were treated for illegal residence in Slovenia are from Albania, Macedonia, Moldova, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
You can also find Albania among the 32 NATO members, just like Turkey. Last year, they found 47 Turkish citizens living illegally in Slovenia and 234 Albanian citizens. This year, in the same period of the first eight months, 230 Albanian citizens and 33 Turkish citizens lived illegally in Slovenia.
